Chairs, Carver chairs & Stools
Designed in 1954 by Pierre Guariche for Steiner, the Tonneau chair, like its companions Amsterdam, Tulipe, Vampire, is a true icon of 20th century design. It responds in every way to the requirements imposed on post-war designers: to design mass-produced furniture at a price accessible to all. Very comfortable thanks to its soft, round and sensual moulded plywood shell, it has a modern and elegant aesthetic with its thin black tubular metal base. This innovative chair is the first French mass-produced plywood seat. Its seat results from the bending of a one-piece moulded plywood shell whose disjointed ends are connected by screws visible on the seat. A leather pad is resting on this seat. The seat has been raised to adapt to the current body shape. The leather pad, originally attached by strings, is now fixed with Velcro. Shell in moulded plywood and stained beech veneer. Black lacquered steel base. For the carver chair, the armrests are in solid stained beech. Black leather seat pad, Goat leather, semi-aniline full-grain goatskin (pigmented), CM 50 kg / m3 polyurethane foam interior (to be fixed under the seat using 2 velcro ties). Wraparound pads. HEIGHT OF ARMS IS 64 cm. The TONNEAU chair has successfully passed the relevant FCBA tests confirming its suitability for contract use.
